The Portuguese landscape at the Quinta da Monte d’Oiro is home to the Mediterranean climate and Atlantic influence whose identity is grounded by its locale characteristics of earthy minerals, hot summers, and rolling hills. CONTEXT

and food industries have been disturbed by the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic (project submitted in July of 2020). In response, to knowledge that viral spread is significantly less outdoors and lessened indoors with use of enhanced ventilation, the project seeks to "open" to the outdoors as much as possible. The Pavilhão à Beira da Colima (Pavilion at the edge of the hill) for the Quinta Monte d’Oiro is situated at the edge of the complex, overlooking the wide expanse of the vineyards. The pavilion takes advantage of the incredible view by creating a entry threshold to slowly reveal the views against the existing loading dock and storehouse behind, two uninspiring industrial

structures that currently form the edge of the property. The pavilion acts as a hinge on the edge of the hill where food and wine tasting occur in a series of unique spaces based upon the group’s size. The hinge on the hill allows for views outward but also focuses inward as a series of courtyards and rooms.

Overall Site Plan

Laminated beams substituted for traditional heavy timber, and steel plate framed windows accentuate the natural materials. Traditional agricultural elements such as large barn doors and colorful tile celebrate the past while looking forwards.

CONSTRUCTION

Exploded Axon

Elevations

The pavilion reimagines the vernacular material and form of the winery and locale. Structural stone walls, large wooden doors, hand plastered walls and terracotta tiles in traditional methods and arrangements form tie this project to the Quinta Monte d’Oiro.
